WOMAN AND BIRD

Before I thought of flying, I was just a child
Caring for the things that adults didn’t want — insects with wings and
Fleeing hedgehogs; the patterns on luminescent rocks
And black tadpoles taken from a stream — four or five of them.

My body became a secret. Suddenly one day
It used an attack of pain to tell me woman’s secret
My iron-grey face couldn’t conceal the wild thoughts inside, I saw
— desire. This let me give birth to the idea of wanting to fly.

I was like a bird opening its wings. I heard my own

I saw a pair of lovebirds fly over my head, scissoring off a corner of the night
And quickly melting back into the dark, becoming part of the darkness, even darker.
I longed to make them fall even more quickly. But I couldn’t, and I said to
The nearest star: I want to fly, to fly.

What I asked for came to pass — my software limbs turned to wings
My eyes became smaller and smaller, piercing layer upon layer of black clouds like the point of a needle.
I set about to fly out of the surrounding blackness, so tired that my face was half brown,
Half red. The night began to be suffused with blue. The night was about to fade.

Just as I was calling out that the night was about to fade, I fell heavily
From the sky. The nearest star vanished pale in its flight
My wings turned back into limbs, my eyes became eyes, the sun shone
Generous and inexpensive.I thought of flying — and I suddenly knew how important night was.
